No ‘Holy Is The Lord?’

I was reading over at Blending Worship an interesting post on a church getting rid of the song ‘Holy Is The Lord’ by Chris Tomlin.  At first I was thinking - whats up with these people?  But then I read and it appears they have valid points to their style of worship

about a month ago we (the worship committee) decided to remove Giglio/Tomlin’s “Holy is the Lord” from our master list…for one simple reason:portions of the lyrics (lift up our hands…bow down…now) are not accurate for our more traditional baptist congregation, and we are VERY hesitant to lead others in speaking words that they do not mean.

I had to look at this for a minute.  How many Churches blindly sing songs out there just because ‘They sound cool’ without thinking of the spiritual repercussions?

thx zach! i’ll be interested to see what your readers might say about this…

The song is biblically correct, not just cool sounding…sadly the leaders in this decision are not.

The bible is clear about “raising Hands” and “bowing down” to our Great Lord.

Why would anyone prevent anyone to NOT want to worship our great God in this way.

I would not want to be in their shoes come judgement day.

Mandy,

No problem. It appears this is a hot debate and this post is grabbing lots of attention. I would also like to hear peoples view on this.

Lynn,

I agree that in my oppinion it is biblically correct - but we also have to remember that there is a diversity among people that follow Jesus. Different people worship in different ways.

In a church I once attended there were people standing with raised hands, people kneeling on the floor praying during worship, people dancing. But that was there style of worship. I think the only real importance is is that they are striving to follow Jesus.

If as a body they choose to not worship in that way - I think its fine and who am I to judge. It doesent appear that there doing anything other then worshiping God.

i like how you do this, zach….. you have great thoughts on this issue.

my readers have had a gamut of responses to this question. although i don’t foresee us changing our decision, some of their perspectives have really helped me to see a balance of what we’ve done.

i pray that maybe one day this church can be a church where the members will feel comfortable with a variety of expressions of worship.

until then, i’m just gonna do my best to serve them as best i know how.

blessings,
mandy
